Kolonia, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, May 2026 – The WCPFC Secretariat delivered a series of online training sessions for new fisheries officials of the European Union, beginning in May 2026.

The sessions introduced the officials to the Commission's reporting requirements and the systems they will use to meet them. The training forms part of the Secretariat's ongoing support to Commission Members, Cooperating Non-Members and Participating Territories (CCMs). That support helps CCMs build their capacity to meet a range of reporting obligations and to manage information on their flagged vessels in WCPFC databases.

Training topics

Secretariat staff led sessions on four areas:

  • Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs) and Annual Report Part 2 – the Commission's binding measures and how CCMs report each year on their implementation.
  • Trackwell VMS – using the platform that supports the Commission's Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) to view and manage information on flagged vessels.
  • Compliance case reporting procedures – how CCMs report on the investigation and follow-up of alleged infringements by their vessels.
  • VMS gaps – identifying and resolving gaps in vessel position reporting to the Commission VMS.

The sessions combined walkthroughs of WCPFC systems with practical guidance, giving officials the opportunity to ask questions directly of Secretariat staff.

Ongoing support to CCMs

Accurate and timely reporting by CCMs underpins the Commission's work to monitor compliance and to manage the region's tuna fisheries sustainably. The Secretariat regularly provides training and technical assistance to help CCMs meet their obligations, particularly when new officials take up WCPFC responsibilities.

CCMs seeking similar support are encouraged to contact the Secretariat.
