Philippine National Tuna Congress

The 11th Philippine Tuna Congress was held at General Santos City, Philippines, 27-29 August 2009. The theme of the Congress 2009 was “Changing Mindsets toward Sustainable Fisheries”. Over two hundred participants from various sectors attended the Congress and around 20 keynote speeches, messages and presentations were addressed. The Commission’s Science Manager delivered key outcomes from the fifth Scientific Committee meeting in August 2009, especially in relation to the implementation of the Conservation and Management Measure 2008-01 (Bigeye and Yellowfin Tuna Measure). The Congress adopted eight resolutions, including the Philippine tuna industry’s strong commitment towards a more responsive and conscientious tuna resource management; and requests to their government on establishing the country’s maritime boundaries and regular patrol, promoting cooperation with FFA and PNA, research on FAD closure, and creating relevant legislature for responsible and sustainable fisheries in Philippines.
